TROY, Ala. - The Troy University athletics department and head softball coach Melanie Davis announced the hiring of Jim Webb as the new first assistant softball coach today.
Webb joins the Trojans after two years as the head softball coach at Chadron State College in Nebraska, starting a new program which began competition last year.
Webb also served as a guest coach of the Russian National Softball Team since 2003 and recently returned to the United States after spending a month in Russia.
Prior to serving at Chadron State, Webb was the athletics director and academic advisor at Southeast Community College in Illinois. While Webb was at Southeast Community College the basketball team won two national championships and the softball team won one.
At Culver-Stockton College, an NAIA college in Missouri, Webb led the softball team to its first regional championship and first national tournament appearance in school history with a 46-15 record, the best season in school history.
Webb served as the athletic director and head softball coach at Lake City Community College from 1994-2001. While at Lake City the softball teams won six consecutive conference titles, four regional titles and had two national runner-up finishes.
"Jim brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program," Davis said. "His success at every level, as both an assistant and as a head coach, speaks for itself.
"I have considered Jim to be one of the best pitching coaches and recruiters in the country for the last several years. We are extremely excited to have him bring this expertise to our program and coaching staff."
At Troy, Webb will work with all phases of the game but will serve as both pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.
Webb graduated from Carthage College in Wisconsin with his bachelor of arts. He earned two advanced degrees from Western Illinois University -- a masters in health and physical education and an education specialist degree in higher education administration.
He has authored several books and many magazine articles and has been the featured speaker or clinician for many state, national and international conventions. Webb served as the chair of the National Junior College Coaches Association and on the board of directors for the National Fast-pitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for two years.
