MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Two old rivals with two of the top pitchers in the Sun Belt Conference hooked up on Saturday to decide the conference softball championship and one walk was the only difference between the two as Florida Atlantic defeated the Troy Trojans 1-0 to claim the tournament crown.
FAU (42-23) scored the only run of the game in the third inning after Melissa Moore drew a one-out walk from Troy's Angela Lopez (21-9). Owls senior catcher Annie Voyles followed with a double that plated Moore with the only run of the game. It was one of just two hits, both by Voyles, that Lopez allowed in the game.
That one run was enough for FAU senior pitcher Jen Musillo (26-11), the Sun Belt Conference pitcher of the year, who threw almost 50 total innings in carrying the Owls to the tournament title.
Troy only had one serious scoring threat in the game, getting back-to-back hits from Courtney Davis and Heidi Johnson to start the sixth inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Musillo struck out Rocky Paige and got Stacey Dwyer to bounce back to the circle to end the threat.
The loss drops the Trojans to 42-20 on the season and leaves their fate in the hands of the NCAA selection committee. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced at 2 p.m. on Sunday and will be available on ESPN News.
