Trojans Beat Coastal Carolina in the Bottom of the Ninth

TROY, Ala.- Sophomore Trevor Tyre made his first career start at third base, hit his first career home run, and had his first career game-winning hit as he knocked in freshman Steven Felix in the bottom of the ninth to give Troy a 6-5 victory.
The win snapped the nation's longest winning streak at 16 games which was held by the 14th ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
In the ninth, senior Clint Robinson singled with two outs. Felix pinch hit for Grant Luke and doubled to right field scoring sophomore Brett Pierce, who pinch ran for Robinson to tie the game at 5-5.
"This was a game that we really needed," head coach Bobby Pierce said. "Trevor had a great night and tonight we competed. Thats what we need to do to be successful."Coastal Carolina (28-4) used back-to-back home runs in the first inning from Chris Raber and Tommy Baldridge to take an early 2-0 lead.
Troy (18-14) plated a run in the bottom of the first when seniors Edgar Ramirez and Robinson both singled and with back-to-back walks to Kevin Weidlich and Tyre. Ramirez's run made the score 2-1.
Tyre hit his first career home run is the bottom of the seventh inning to close the gap to 5-4.
Coastal Carolina added two more runs in the second inning and another run in the fifth. The first four runs all came with two outs.
Bobby Gagg had a career-high night as he struck out 11 Trojan hitters. He threw six innings allowing four runs on eight hits. David Anderson (3-2) came on in the seventh inning to take the loss. He threw 2 1/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits.
Freshman Tim Wheeler got the start for the Trojans going five innings while giving up five runs on seven hits and striking out three. Junior Ryan Ellison (2-1) came on in relief and struck out seven batters while not issuing a hit in four innings of work to get the win.
Troy was led at the plate by Tyre who was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Robinson had three hits on the night with two RBI.
The win tonight was the 700th win for Pierce in his career.Troy will look to win the series Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
