ORLANDO, Fla. - Under clear skies, but blustery and cool conditions Monday morning, Troy posted four rounds in the eighties at the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship at Disney's Eagle Pines course. The Trojans are 11th with a team score of 335, but are only one stroke out of 10th..
Denver has the team lead at 10-over 298, while South Alabama's Michelle Toth was the only player at even-par with a 72.
Freshman Kaley Branton led the Trojans at eight-over par 80 in a tie for 29th, while Charlotte Sundqvist fired an 11-over par 83 (tie for 41st). Desirae Zine finished in 47th at 84, while Danielle Skipper is tied for 50th at 88. Sarah Weldon carded a 94, her best effort in four postseason rounds, to stand 55th.
It was really tough out there today with the wind,” Branton said. "The course played much longer and I had to hit woods into a couple of greens. It was hard to get into a rhythm because you would stand over a putt and the the wind would force you to back away.”
Branton parred the first four holes before a bogey on five. She also bogeyed nine to make the turn at two-over 38. Her only birdie of the day on 14 balanced out a bogey on 12, but she finished bogey, double-bogey, bogey to finish the round at 80.
I just could not putt today,” Branton added . I thought I hit the ball well enough to shoot 72, but had 33 or 34 putts.
"It was a tough day with the wind and we made some big mistakes," Head Coach Matt Terry said. "But all the scores are up and this is just the first day. We know we can post a better score tomorrow."
Troy's second round begins Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m.
