TROY, Ala.- The Trojans used back-to-back home runs from seniors Ian Craze and Edgar Ramirez to lead Troy to a series win over FIU by a score of 8-4.
FIU (14-13, 2-4) came out clicking on all cylinders. Lead-off batter Chris Dunn led off the game with a home run. Bryan Pullin followed later in the inning with a three run bomb giving FIU the early 4-0 lead.
Troy (15-10, 6-3) had to answer a four run first inning by FIU and it took them until the third to come out of their shell. Freshman Steven Felix got a two out double and scored on Craze's third home run of the season. Ramirez followed with his third bomb of the year. Seniors Kevin Weidlich, Josh Dew and Clint Robinson all singled with Weidlich scoring on Robinson's hit giving the Trojans a 4-4 tie.
Troy coach Bobby Pierce was pleased how his team never quit.
"FIU jumped on us early but we kept swinging the bat to get back in the game," Pierce said. "We never quit and it is good to win the series because every conference series is big to win."
Troy added two more runs in the fifth inning when Ramirez singled to center field that was again followed by a Dew single. Robinson came through with a two-RBI double down the left field line increasing the lead to 6-4.
In the seventh, Ramirez cranked his second home run of the game. Dew and Robinson singled and Dew scored on a fielder's choice by Brett Henry.
Freshman Tim Wheeler (3-1) got the win on the mound going six full innings and giving up four runs on four hits. All of the runs came in the first inning. Dew (5) came on in relief to get his league leading fifth save.
The Trojans pounded out 14 hits off of three FIU pitchers. The Trojans were led by Dew who was 4-for-4 . Robinson was 3-for-4 with three RBI while Ramirez was 3-for-5 with two home runs and two RBI. Felix was 2-for-3.
The Trojans will be back at home Tuesday night as they play host to Jacksonville State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
