Alabama, Louisville and LSU Highlight 2008 Softball Schedule

TROY, Ala. ? The Troy Trojans will play host to the University of Alabama on April 10 at the Troy Softball Complex, while also traveling to Baton Rouge to face Louisiana State on March 11 as part of their 2008 schedule as announced by head coach Melanie Davis today.

Troy, runner-up in the Sun Belt Conference in 2007, will also face the University of Louisville on two occasions. Both those match ups will come as a part of tournament play, the first hosted by Samford University and the other hosted by the University of Mississippi.

The Samford (February 15-17) and Ole Miss (February 29-March 2) Tournaments will be two of the five tournaments Troy will compete in as they will also travel to Florida State on opening weekend (February 8-9), Virginia Tech (February 22-24) and Georgia Tech (March 7-9).

“We have tried to put together a strong tournament schedule against proven Division I teams,” Davis said.

“The key for the Sun Belt Conference to get more than our one guaranteed team into the NCAA tournament is for all of the member schools to play strong non-conference schedules and do well with those,” she said.

The Trojans will also play a difficult 24 game Sun Belt Conference schedule. Troy will welcome a dangerous Louisiana-Lafayette squad to Troy on April 26-27.

Troy will also travel to Boca Raton, Florida for a rematch with their 2007 conference championship game opponent, Florida Atlantic, on April 5-6.

The two biggest single games will be the visit from Alabama and the trip to LSU.

“We are very excited about welcoming back the University of Alabama to Troy, as they are a perennial top 10 team in the country,” Davis said.

This is the first visit by the Crimson Tide to Troy since 2005. LSU will also be ranked highly in the pre-season poll.

“We feel very good about the schedule we have put together and that it will prepare our team for a very successful season,” Davis said.

The Trojans open their 2008 season on February 8 in Tallahassee, Fla. against Southern Mississippi as a part of a tournament hosted by the Florida State Seminoles. Troy will play their first home game on February 12 as they host Samford at 4 pm.
