Trojans Stand 8th After Opening Day in Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Troy University men's golf team enters the final round of play today at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate in a tied for 8th place, 16 strokes behind the tournament leader, and host, Southern Miss.
The three-round event is being played at Camebrake Country Club, a 6,964-yard, par-71 course that is the summer home of Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre.
Troy finished the two opening rounds at 11-over par 579. The Trojans combined for a six over 290 in the first round before shooting a five-over 289 in the second round on Monday.
Southern Miss leads the event with a team score of 563, which is five-under par. UAB is one stroke back at 564 with Jacksonville State (565) and St. John's (567) within striking distance heading into today's final round.
JSU's Gonzalo Berlin leads the event from an individual standpoint after shooting opening rounds of 67 and 65 to close the first day at 10-under par.
Senior Jordy Hayden (Livingston, Ala.) turned in the best score for the Trojans on Monday, shooting rounds of 69 and 73 for an even par 142 to tie for 15th in the event. Junior Michael McGray (Harare, Zimbabwe) is two shots further back (144) in a tie for 23rd.
The other Trojans in the tournament are junior Justin Eaves (Louisville, Miss.) who is tied for 38th with a two-round score of 146, junior Wes Parker of Enterprise, Ala., who is tied for 48th at 148, and sophomore Chase Whitehead of Eufaula, Ala., who is tied for 52nd with a score of 150.
The tournament will conclude with Tuesday's final round, which started play at 7:30 a.m.
