MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Troy University Trojans women's golf team moved up one spot in the final round, finishing fifth in the Troy Women's Invitational held at Arrowhead Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.
The finish was the best in the past two years for the Troy women's team, and pleased head coach Matt Terry.
"I am pleased that were able to end the fall with the best tournament we have had in the last two years," Terry said. "We actually had a chance to win today, but we ended up losing 16 shots over the last two holes. I am disappointed in the way we finished the last few holes, but I am proud of the way our girls played during the tournament."
Trailing Jacksonville State by nine strokes heading into the final round, the Trojans found themselves shooting nine-over par through 12 holes and finished the day by shooting 26-over par (314). The Trojans finished 16 shots back (at 102-over par) at 627 behind eventual champion Jacksonville State University, as the Gamecocks finished at 86-over par with a 611 for the tournament.
The tournament led to many low scores, for both teams and individuals, with Nicholls State coming in second behind Jacksonville State with a 91-over par 616. They were followed by Belmont at 94-over-par 619, and Tennessee Tech at 98-over par 623.
"I thought the tournament went great," Terry said. "The weather was perfect, and the course was in great condition. The tournament, as a whole, ran well and the teams enjoyed themselves. When you have 96 players, things can go wrong, but this tournament ran smooth on both days."
Top honors for the tournament went to Nicholls State's Daniele Dunlop with a six-over par 150, followed closely by four players at seven-over par 151. Those players finishing second were Chloe Mims of Centenary, Madison Denman of Tennessee Tech, Merielle LeBlanc of Jackson State and Lorie Warren of Belmont.
The Trojans were led by Kaley Branton, who finished tied for 11th place, with a 10-over par 154. She was followed by teammate Annelies Anderson at 13th, with an 11-over par 155. The duo was followed in by Danielle Skipper with a 12-over par 156, placing her in a tie for 19th position. The final two slots went to Liz Balkcom and Desirae Zine with a 22-over par 166, placing them in a tie for 65th position.
"I am looking forward to Februrary," Terry said. "With the way the ladies worked today, and if they will work hard in the offseason, we will be in a better position when the season rolls around."
