Classic of Troy has Day of Upsets
TROY, Ala.- The USTA Classic of Troy ends the day with numerous upsets.
The number three seed, Varvara Lepchenko of the United States was defeated by Exaterina Shulaeva of Canada 6-4, 6-3.
Marie-Eve Pelletier, the number five seed from Canada, was defeated by Eva Hrdinova of the Czech Republic 6-0, 4-6, 7-5.
Also, Jelena Pandzic of Croatia beat the the number eight seed, Kristina Brandi 6-2, 6-2.
The number two seed, Maret Ani of Estonia beat Svetlana Krivencheva of Bulgaria 6-2, 6-2, to claim her spot in the quarterfinals .
On the doubles side of the court, the number three seeded Maria-fernanda Alves from Brazil and Stephanie DuBois, the number one seed in singles, from Canada defeated Michaela Johansson of Sweden and Carmen Klaschka from Germany 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals of the Classic of Troy begin Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. at Lunsford Tennis Complex on the Troy Campus.
