Trojans pick up wins at Alabama Fall Classic

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- Over 100 singles and doubles players competed in the first round of singles and the first and second round of doubles in a little under nine hours today at the UA Varsity Courts on the University of Alabama campus.
Alabama's annual fall event went off without a hitch as the sky cleared just in time for the first match to begin. The day kicked off at 9:00 a.m. with first round singles action.
Troy claimed two singles victories in the first round Friday morning. Benjamin Chomette dropped the first set against Radford's James Lloyd, but was able to come back and win his opening match in three sets; 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. His teammate, Bastian Maucher defeated Mike Depietro of Michigan 7-5, 6-3 in the opening round on Friday.
The other two singles matches the Trojans played in were not as successful, with Guilherme Sahadhi dropping a three-set match to Southern Mississippi's Strate Krsterski 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Meanwhile, Andrew Felsenthal of Alabama defeated Marko Zivkovic 6-4, 6-1 in their opening round match.
The tournament's top two seeds Phillipe Frayssinoux of Mississippi State and Alabama's Billy Mertz awaited the outcome of the first round matches in order to size up their competition for tomorrow. Frayssinoux will face Nejc Podkrajsek of Georgia State in the quarterfinals. Podkrajsek came from behind defeat UAB's Hans Spangeburg 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 to advance. In the bottom of the Bryant bracket, Mertz will face off against Alberto Gonzales of Auburn Montgomery. Gonzales defeated James Lemke of Pepperdine 0-6, 7-5, 6-2.
In double for the Trojans, the team of Diego Martinez and Sahadi won their opening round match 8-5, before fall to the team of Alfredo Krywacz and Chris Slabbert (UT-Martin) in the quarterfinals, 8-5.
In doubles action, the top seeded team from Alabama cruised to the semi finals where they will face off against Georgia State's Anze Cevka and Nejc Podkrajsek. The Tide's Buikema and Thibaudeau defeated Rob Lowe and Christian Welte of N.C. State 8-3 before downing Tennessee's Matt Brewer and Chris Racz 8-4.
Play will resume tomorrow with the second and third round of singles starting at 9:00 a.m. Doubles action will begin immediately following singles.
