TROY -- The Troy University tennis program signed a pair of Brazilian players to its women's team and men's players from Serbia, France and Germany as part of its 2006 recruiting class, head coach Eric Hayes announced today.
On the women's side, Hayes inked Fabiana Gouveia and Stephanie Vieira to letters-of-intent. Gouveia, a freshman from Rio de Janiero, is ranked in the top 15 among juniors in her country, while Vieira, a freshman from Novo Hamburgo, Brazil, is listed in the top 10.
Dusan Medan, a freshman from Nis, Serbia, holds a top five ranking in Serbia and Montenegro, while Bastian Maucher, who hails from Stuttgart, Germany is among the top 50 junior players in his country. Bona Ung, who hails from Villeurbanne, France. He will transfer from French University in January and have two years of eligibility remaining. Ung has already defeated several players who finished 2005-06 in the top 20 of the ITA (collegiate) national rankings.
"This is the strongest class we have brought to Troy in the four years I have been here," Hayes said. "We addressed needs on both teams, especially depth. If we stay healthy, we can push for both Sun Belt Championships."
Troy's women finished the 2005-06 campaign ranked 68th in the nation by the ITA. Next season, they will return five of their top six players. No. 1 player Irving Morales heads the list of veterans on the men's side. Brothers Milos and Marko Kustudija, who played positions 2 and 3, respectively, are also on the list of players back for 2006-07.
