MIAMI - The Troy University softball team will be the No. 5 seed when the Sun Belt Conference tournament begins on Thursday.
This will be Troy's (28-38, 5-10 SBC) first appearance in the Sun Belt tournament as they moved into the conference this season. Last season, as a member of the Atlantic Sun conference the Trojans were the runners-up in the conference tournament, losing to UCF in the final game.
The Trojans will first face Middle Tennessee, who is the No. 4 seed at 1:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday at the University Park Softball Field on the campus of Florida International.
If the Trojans win they will move on to the next round of the tournament and will play No. 1 seed Louisiana-Lafayette at 6:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday night. If Troy loses then they move to the loser's bracket and will play the loser of the Louisiana-Lafayette game at 1:30 p.m. EDT on Friday.
The Sun Belt tournament will run Thursday thru Saturday on the campus of FIU with the six teams competing for Sun Belt Conference champion. The winner of the tournament is not guaranteed a bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Currently the Trojans are on a four game losing streak and its last six games have all been decided by one run. This season Troy has played 23 one run games and is 6-17 when games are decided by one run.
Freshman Heidi Johnson will be the Trojan to watch in the tournament as she has broken two school records in 2006. The first record she broke was the RBI in a game as she notched eight against South Florida on March 25th and led the Trojans to a 17-5 win. Then on Sunday against FIU, Johnson broke the school record for home runs by a freshman as she hit her ninth home run of the season.
Live stats for the Sun Belt tournament will be available on www.troytrojans.com as provided by FIU.
