The Jaguars won in the Nos. 1 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead into singles play. Monte Tucker defeated Marko Despot 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 position, and Mark Gellard topped Diego Martinez 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 position to put South Alabama up 3-0. USA's Jack Baker defeated Marko Kustudija 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot to clinch the win for the Jaguars.
South Alabama just outplayed us, they're a contender for the championship and they just played better than we did,” Troy head coach Eric Hayes said.
The women's team won the doubles point against No. 71 Louisiana-Lafayette, but rain delayed singles play until 10 a.m. Saturday.
The girls played well to get the doubles point,” Hayes said. That was big for us to go up 1-0 against a ranked team. Now we just have to go out and finish it in singles play.”
The winner will face the winner of the match between Florida Atlantic and North Texas at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
