PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Troy's men's golf team climbed one spot to third place after two rounds of the Sun Belt Conference Championships Tuesday, shooting two-over 290. The Trojans have a 36-hole score of 582, 10 shots behind leader Western Kentucky.
Brandon Anthony fired his second straight 71 Tuesday and stands tied for fifth at two-under 142. Anthony turned in even par after a birdie at No. 3 and a three-putt bogey at No. 7. He eagled 13 for the second straight day, this time draining a 60-foot putt, then birdied 14. Bogeys at No. 16 and 18 left him one-under for the day.
"I played pretty well today, despite feeling shaky and jittery at the beginning," said Anthony. "I thought the pins were easier today than yesterday. As far as tomorrow goes, I think we have a good chance... 10 back is a little further than I want, but we have done it before. We are pretty confident.
"Individually, I just want to do the same things that I have done the first two days. I would take another 71."
Jay Howell is tied for 11th at one-over 145 after adding a 74 Tuesday to Monday's 71.
McGrady rebounded from his 77 yesterday with a 71 on Tuesday and is now tied for 21st. He birdied No. 2 and No. 6 before three-putting five. On the backside, McGrady had a couple of three putts, but finished strong with a birdie at No. 18. Overall, he hit 17 greens in regulation, but had 34 putts.
"I thought I played well," said McGrady. "I got off to a good start and hit the ball well today. I haven't putted well either day. Tomorrow, I want to shoot a score to help the team. 10 back is nothing."
Donnie Parker is tied for 25th at 149 (73-76), while Steve Sims rounds out the scoring at 154 (80-74/t37).
"I am pleased with the performance and effort we have put forth so far," siad head coach Matt Terry. "Being 10 shots back, being in the final group, gives us a chance at winning. When we started back in the fall, we wanted to go to bed Tuesday night with an opportunity to play for the title. We have that tomorrow."
The final round will be played Wednesday, beginning at 8 a.m. The Trojans tee off No. 1 from 8:40 to 9:16.
