PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Troy battled windy conditions and a tough Pete Dye layout Tuesday morning enroute to an opening round 344 at the Sun Belt Conference Championships. The Trojans are 10th among the 10 teams.
Danielle Skipper led the charge with a seven-over 79, good enough for a tie for 20th. Six-over through 12 holes, she birdied No. 12 and made a nice up-and-down on No. 13 to sit at five-over. Bogeys at No. 13 and 14 left her at seven-over before pars on the final two holes.
"I am pretty happy with the round," admitted Skipper. "I left a few out there, so it could have been better. There is always tomorrow. I only missed one fairway, so my tee shots were pretty good. I struggled today with my short game."
Katelyn Crosson and Kristy Stephens each turned in 41, but struggled on the back side. Crosson finished tied for 28th at 83, while Stephens posted an 87 for 47th place. Sara Weldon, who joined the team in mid-season, posted her best competitive round ever at 95 (49th), while Sam Kreiger rounded out the scoring with a 102 (50th).
"I was very pleased that Sarah got herself a personal milestone and that Danielle has gotten off to a good start," said head coach Matt Terry. "I am looking forward to see if we can improve tomorrow."
The second round will be played Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m.
