Trojans Split with Hilltoppers

Freshman Heidi Johnson hit a two-run home run to lead the Trojans to a split with Western Kentucky on Friday.
Troy (23-29, 2-3) dropped the first game 2-0 but rebounded in game two and picked up the win, 2-1.
Johnson's seventh home run of the season came in game two of the doubleheader to put Troy on the board, 2-0.
Johnson ended the game one for three with two RBIs. Overall Troy only had three hits compared to the Hilltoppers six but it was enough in the end for the win.
Shelby Smith hit a solo home run to start off the fourth for Western Kentucky (22-19, 3-2) and close the gap but proved to not be enough in the end.
Sophomore Angela Lopez notched the win in the circle for Troy as she pitched seven innings and allowed one run on six hits. Lopez improved to 9-9 on the season.
The first game went scoreless for nine innings before either team could score a run.
The Hilltoppers clinched the win in the ninth on a single by Adrienne Lathrop which scored Rebecca Horesky from second. Then Brooks singled scoring Sam Cronk to extend the lead for the Hilltoppers, 2-0.
Troy was unable to do anything in the bottom of the ninth to continue play. The Trojans left a total of six runners on base against the Hilltoppers.
Sophomore Jessica Lyle went two for four with a triple to lead Troy offensively. Lyle now has six triples this season.
Junior Laine Harcourt took the loss on the mound as she went nine innings allowed eight hits and two runs. Harcourt is now 12-15 for the season.
Troy will wrap up the three game series on Saturday with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. at the Trojan Softball Complex. Live stats will be available on www.troytrojans.com.
