Trojans Lose Two at UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Troy University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader with UAB on Tuesday by scores of 2-0 and 10-2.
Troy (11-10) was unable to get anything going on offense as it had a total of five hits in both games compared to UAB (11-6) who had 15 hits.
Troy started the scoring in game two when junior Brooke Powell walked then advanced to second when freshman Felicia Hammer walked. Freshman Katie Taber reached on an error by the second baseman advancing pinch runner junior Amanda Ragans to third. Junior Brittany Krbec walked which brought in Ragans from third, 1-0 Troy.
In the bottom of the third, UAB had four hits and scored five runs to lift itself over the Trojans, 5-1 UAB.
After giving up five runs, sophomore Angela Lopez was relieved by junior Michelle Grinage. Lopez left the game with four hits, five runs and three walks with 16 batters faced.
Troy loaded the bases in the fourth with no outs but was only able to score one run as Hammer came home on a sacrifice fly by junior Angie Coteat, 5-2 UAB.
The Blazers extended their lead in the fourth when sophomore Holly Krzan doubled bringing in junior Allison Davis. Then Andrea Rogers singled which scored junior Lindsey Stanley from third, 7-2 UAB.
In the fifth, UAB added to its lead when sophomore Leigh Walker hit a solo home run, 8-2.
UAB clinched the game in the end of the fifth when Davis singled, advanced to third on a throwing error by Grinage and then scored on a single by senior Chelsea McCall. Stanley made it to second on a throwing error by Grinage and then scored on McCall's single, 10-2 UAB.
Troy dropped the first game to UAB 2-0 and only had two hits. Junior Laine Harcourt received the loss as she allowed two runs and four hits in six innings of work.
Ragans and freshman Heidi Johnson recorded the only hits in the game for Troy as they each went one for three.
UAB got on the board early in game one after sophomore Amanda Antonovich doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch by Harcourt and then scored on a single by Stanley. Then in the fourth, freshman Andrea Rogers hit her third home run of the season to extend the lead for the Blazers, 2-0.
Troy will be back in action on Friday when it travels to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete in the Florida State Tournament. Troy will play Appalachian State, Indiana and Tulsa in the tournament, which will begin on Friday and run through Sunday.
