Trojans Unable to Score Runs Against Bulldogs

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Troy University softball team lost both games to Samford on Thursday by scores of 3-2 and 2-1.
Game two went eight innings as Samford (13-25) scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on an error by sophomore pitcher Angela Lopez. Meghan Wagner scored on a fielder's choice by Lopez to tie. Then on the same play Lopez overthrew to freshman catcher Felicia Hammer and Jessica Owens scored on the error.
In the top of the eighth, junior Angie Coteat scored on a sacrifice bunt by junior Brooke Powell to put Troy (20-24) up over the Bulldogs, 2-1. Coteat was pinch running for junior Brittany Krbec, who was placed on second as instructed by the international tie-breaker.
Samford broke up the perfect game by Lopez in the sixth when Owens singled to the left side bringing in Caroline Powell. Powell was hit by a pitch to reach base and was the first runner in the game for the Bulldogs.
Troy tied the game in the top of the seventh when sophomore Jessica Lyle doubled scoring senior Sally Jones from first, 1-1.
Jones and Lyle each went two for four and Lyle notched one RBI.
The Trojans had an opportunity to score in the fourth when they loaded the bases with no outs but were unable to bring in a run leaving three runners on base. Troy left ten runners on base in game two and a total of 16 in the doubleheader.
Lopez went seven point one innings allowed three runs on three hits with only one run being earned. Lopez fell to 8-7 on the season.
In game one, Troy was unable to hang onto a one run lead going into the seventh. Samford scored the first run to tie when Liz Pearse doubled scoring Jessica Owens, who pinch ran for Katie England.
Then on the next play Jenna Dempski reached on a fielder's choice after she bunted to sacrifice but Jeslyn Metcalf scored on the play ending the game.
Troy scored its only run in the second when Jones was hit by a pitch after Samford loaded the bases, scoring freshman Heidi Johnson. Johnson doubled to reach base and was the only Trojan on base during the inning who was not hit by a pitch.
Jones ended the game two for two and Johnson went one for three, scoring the only run for the Trojans.
Junior Laine Harcourt notched the loss on the mound as she allowed two runs on five hits in six innings of work. Harcourt falls to 10-12 on the season.
The Trojans will have the weekend off before traveling to Atlanta, Ga., on Tuesday for a doubleheader with Georgia State.
