Trojans Sweep Golden Eagles

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Troy swept Southern Miss by scores of 3-0 and 7-4 on Wednesday as freshman Felicia Hammer hit a two-run home run in the second game to start the scoring for Troy.
Hammer hit her fifth home run of the season in the second inning of game two to lift the Trojans (17-18) over Southern Miss early, 2-0 Troy.
Senior Sally Jones helped extend the lead for Troy in the third when she doubled bringing in sophomore Jessica Lyle and junior Brooke Powell. Lyle reached on a fielder's choice and Powell reached on an error by the pitcher, 4-0 Troy.
After Jones doubled, junior Brittany Krbec hit a ball up the middle that was mishandled by the second baseman, which scored two more runs for Troy, 6-0.
Powell doubled in the fourth to bring in sophomore Caurie Miller, who walked, to increase the lead for Troy, 7-0.
The Golden Eagles (15-20) finally got a run on the board in the fourth when Allison Bullard singled bringing in Jessica Huerta who reached on an error by Miller. Bullard's hit broke up a no-hitter by Lopez.
Southern Miss also scored in the sixth to even the score a little when Melissa Prouty doubled with two outs bringing in Kristen Pilgrim and Nicole Chisolm. Then Charity Butler singled bringing in Prouty from second making it a three-run game, 7-4 Troy.
In game two, Miller went two for three scoring and a run and Jones went two for four with two RBI and scored a run. Hammer ended the game one for two, two RBIs, scored two runs and walked once.
Sophomore Angela Lopez went seven innings allowed five hits, four runs and struck out five and faced 33 batters.
In game one with the Golden Eagles, Lyle went two for three with a double and two RBIs as she led the Trojans to a win.
Troy started the scoring in the third when Lyle doubled bringing in junior Stacey Dwyer, who reached base on a fielder's choice, 1-0 Troy.
In the top of the seventh, Lyle came up big again for Troy as she singled up the middle bringing in junior Amanda Ragans, pinch running for Krbec. Junior Angie Coteat scored from first on the same play when the center fielder mishandled the ball, 3-0 Trojans.
Also performing well offensively for Troy in game one was Dwyer who went two for four with a double and stole two bases.
On the mound, junior Laine Harcourt notched the win allowing only two hits and two walks in 25 batters faced. Harcourt improved to 8-9 on the season and pitched her 16th complete game of the year.
The Trojans will leave for Macon, Ga., on Thursday for the Mercer Invitational, which will begin on Friday. Schools competing in tournament are host Mercer University, South Florida and Siena.
