AUBURN, Ala. - Freshman Katie Taber hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to get Troy within striking distance of No. 19 Auburn but it was not enough as the Trojans fell 4-3 on Tuesday night.
Taber hit the first home run of her collegiate career to get the Trojans (13-15) back in the game. Taber's three-run home run brought in junior Amanda Ragans, who pinch ran for Powell and sophomore Caurie Miller, 4-3 Tigers. Miller and Powell both singled to get on base.
Taber ended the game two for three with two RBIs.
This weekend we were over in Tallahassee and I told Katie before an at bat I didn't bring you all the way from Dublin, Calif., and you not be able to hit the ball. I know what you can do. Tonight we saw what she can do, she is a very capable power hitter and I'm real happy for her.,” head coach Melanie Davis said. It just goes to show you how one swing of the bat can put you back in the game when people set the table for you as the preceding batters did.”
Auburn (20-4) started the scoring in the second when Kristina McCain hit a three-run home run with runners at first and second, 3-0 Tigers.
The Tigers started the fourth off with a solo home run by Sara Ghezzi, 4-0. Auburn would do no more damage in that inning as Brittany Scott was caught stealing, Taryn Gray flied out to left field and Heather Garrison grounded out to second baseman Brooke Powell.
Laine Harcourt received the loss on the mound as she fell to 5-7 on the season. Harcourt went six innings allowing seven hits, four runs and two home runs.
Also hitting well for the Trojans against the Tigers, was Powell as she went two for four.
I'm real proud of how we came together and fought back to be within striking distance at the final pitch,” Davis said.
The Trojans will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Tampa, Fla., to compete in the University of South Florida Invitational.
