No. 66 South Alabama (7-4, 1-0) swept doubles play to take a 1-0 lead. The Jaguars won the first set in five of the six singles matches, with Annabelle Bares being the only Trojan to win her first set.
Troy (4-2, 1-1 SBC) pulled even at 1-1 when Tsitsi Masviba won on a default in the No. 2 position.
Suzanne Jones and Caroline Joanin each won their second sets to force a third, but USA clinched the match with wins in the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 positions.
We came out flat in the doubles, and that is unacceptable,” Troy head coach Eric Hayes said. South Alabama won those three matches that went three sets, and that was the difference. They were mentally tougher than us today. We have to come back tomorrow and play tougher.”
The Trojans will return to action on Tuesday when they host Indiana State at 2 p.m.Tennis Match ResultsSouth Alabama vs Troy3/13/2006 at Troy, Ala.#66 South Alabama 5, #71 Troy 2 Singles competition 1.
