Home Runs Lift Trojans To Sweep Over Lions

TROY, Ala. - Sophomore Caurie Miller and junior Stacey Dwyer each hit home runs on Sunday to give the Trojans a sweep over the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana, 4-2 and 6-4.
Miller hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning of game one to drive in freshman Kim Kelley and put the Trojans (9-4) up, 3-1. Miller went three for three with two RBIs in that game. In game two, Miller was two for three with one RBI.
In game two, Dwyer hit a home run in the fifth inning to extend the Trojans lead, 6-3. Dwyer went three for three with two RBIs and accounted for one run in game two with the Lions.
I was real pleased today with how our girls provided solid run support for our pitching staff. It was a complete team effort today, we had solid defense throughout the day and our pitchers did what it took to pull out two wins,” head coach Melanie Davis said.
In the second game, the Lions (4-6) hit three home runs to account for three of their four runs and in the seventh sophomore Brooke Lockhart scored on a wild pitch from junior Michelle Grinage.
Grinage received the save for Troy as she came in at the top of the seventh gave up one hit, one walk and one run in five batters faced.
Lopez started the game and left in the sixth after allowing three runs, three hits and notching nine strikeouts in 21 batters faced.
The first inning set the momentum of the game for the Trojans as Dwyer singled, then sophomore Jessica Lyle doubled and freshman Felicia Hammer walked which brought in Dwyer from third. Hammer then stole second and Miller singled on a bunt bringing in Lyle.
The second inning was also big for the Trojans as junior Brooke Powell doubled, and then advanced after senior Sally Jones hit a groundball to the pitcher. Junior Amanda Ragans singled bringing in Powell from third. Then junior Angie Coteat singled advancing Ragans to second and then Ragans reached third on a throwing error by the pitcher on the play. Ragans then scored after Dwyer singled.
Powell had two doubles and accounted for one run. Powell currently leads the team offensively with a .368 batting average, 14 hits, four doubles, three home runs and nine RBIs. Powell has a slugging percentage of .711 and an on-base percentage of .400.
Junior Laine Harcourt pitched for the win in game one and in seven innings of work allowed two runs, seven hits, two walks and seven strikeouts facing 29 batters.
Troy the fifth inning of game one was action packed as Hammer doubled, reached third on a sacrifice bunt by Powell and scored on an error by the left fielder.
For the day, Troy had 15 hits, seven RBIs and ten runs. Defensively, the Trojans had 42 put outs and 11 assists.
The Trojans will be back in action on Tues. when they travel to Auburn, Ala., to play No. 5 University of Michigan at 4 p.m.
