Statesboro, Ga. - After dropping two games on Saturday, the Troy softball team came to the plate swinging on Sunday to beat the Eagles of Georgia Southern (3-9), 4-1.
Due to field conditions after Saturday's rain, only one field was available for use on Sunday for the playoffs of the Georgia Southern Tournament.
Louisville and Maryland had travel plans that could not be changed so they opted to play at 10 a.m. and forfeit the right to play for the championship. Therefore, the Trojans played the winner of the 8 a.m. game between Georgia Southern and Charleston Southern for the tournament title.
Junior Stacey Dwyer went two for three with two RBIs to lead the Trojans (6-3) offensively against the Eagles.
Dwyer singled to center field bringing sophomore Caurie Miller from second base to start the scoring for Troy in the second inning.
In the fourth, junior Brittany Krbec reached first on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second on an error by Georgia Southern shortstop Carrie Miller. Then Dwyer singled which brought in Krbec, making the score 2-0 Troy.
Junior Brooke Powell came through in a two out, runner on second situation in the fifth, with a two-run home run to put Troy up, 4-0. The home run was Powell's third of the year and the eighth of her career.
Junior Michelle Grinage got the win on the mound for the Trojans. Grinage allowed no runs and five hits facing 20 batters in five point one innings of work in her first start of the season.
Georgia Southern scored on a single by A.J. Street after Heather Smith reached on an error by Powell.
Troy will be back in action when it travels to Tallahassee, Fla., on Wed. to take on the Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M at 4 p.m.
