Game 2 Box Score
TROY, Ala. - Troy University softball started the season on a sour note as it dropped the first game of the season 4-3 against North Florida. Troy bounced back though against Alabama A&M on the first day of the Trojan Classic as they defeated the Bulldogs 5-0.
In game one, junior Brooke Powell had two hits in four at bats with a home run and two RBIs. The home run was Powell's first of the season and the sixth of her career.
Also for the Trojans, freshman Heidi Johnson got Troy on the board as she hit her first collegiate home run in her first at bat of her first collegiate game. Against Alabama A&M, Johnson had one hit in two at bats with an RBI and accounted for a run.
Against North Florida, Troy stranded 10 runners on base, which hindered their attempt at a late inning comeback. Troy did not have a hit after the fifth inning of that game.
Junior Angie Coteat had one hit in three at bats, accounted for a run with four put outs against North Florida.
In game one in particular, Angie Coteat, did a great job of stepping into the outfield and had some great catches for us out there, showed her speed on the base paths and was also effective at the plate,” head coach Melanie Davis said.
Sophomore pitcher Angela Lopez helped Troy rebound from the loss earlier in the day as she faced 16 batters allowing one hit, one walk and striking out eight. It was Lopez's first start for the Trojans. Lopez did not allow a hit until the fourth inning striking out six and walking one before that.
We're pleased all in all with our newcomers and not to mention Angela Lopez doing a great job in our night-capper against Alabama A&M,” Davis said.
The fourth inning proved to be the game changer against Alabama A&M as Troy had three hits and four runs.
In the sixth, freshman catcher Felicia Hammer hit her first collegiate home run to put the Trojans on top 5-0. Hammer had two hits in three at bats with one RBI. She also had 10 put outs in that game. Against North Florida, Hammer had one hit in three at bats and eight put outs.
Well its nice to be standing here with one of my assistant coaches who hands me the two game balls that two of our freshmen hit their first collegiate home runs in our first outing here today. I'm extremely proud of Heidi and Felicia, I know that they are going to have great careers here at Troy,” Davis said. They're extremely talented hardworking young ladies and we look forward to having them here for four years.”
North Florida was a frustrating contest for us. I felt like our kids did a great job of battling back but you've got to give North Florida credit because if we scored a run they answered and they kept us on our heels,” Davis said. We stranded 10 base runners which is not unusual for your first outing. I am real proud at how our girls bounced back against Alabama A&M to pick up this win and we look forward to taking the field again tomorrow.”
The Trojan Classic will start tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. with North Florida vs. Alabama A&M. Troy will play the last two games of the day, starting with North Florida at 1 p.m. and ending with Alabama A&M at 3:30 p.m.
Admission to all Troy softball games is free.
