McCalla -- A school-record round of 12-under par 274 capped a mad comeback and gave Troy the championship of the Southern Showdown in its first tournament of the 2005-06 season. The Trojans, who trailed day-one leader Belmont by 12 strokes Monday, counted four under-par rounds to steal a three-stroke victory at 23-under 829.
The win was the first since the Emerald Classic last March, when the Trojans established bests for a single round (12-under 276 in the second) and a tournament (10-under 854).
Keith Crowley led the way with a 54-hole score of seven under 206 (67-71-68), tying for fifth. Brandon Anthony, Jay Harris and Steve Sims also recorded top 20 finishes. Anthony fired the team's best round of the tournament on Tuesday, a 66 that moved him into a tie for eighth at six-under 207 (71-70-66). Harris was a stroke behind in 11th place at 208 (72-68-68), while Sims finished tied for 13th at three-under 210 (69-69-72). Wes Parker rebounded from a 78 Monday to shoot 70 on Tuesday, finishing 57th at eight-over 221 (73-78-70).
Three other Trojans competed in the individual competition. Paul Amess tied for 58th at 222 (76-74-72), while David Rasco recorded rounds of 80, 76 and 82 to place in a tie for 81st at 238. Brad Martin fired an 81 Monday morning, but did not participate in the second and third rounds.
Troy returns to action this weekend at the ULM Fred Marx Classic in Monroe, La.
