NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Troy University Softball split a doubleheader with Lipscomb Friday in Nashville, Tenn. The Trojans dropped game on 1-0 in eight innings and won game two 6-0. The game one loss snapped a six-game conference winning streak for the Trojans as Lipscomb ended Troy's unbeaten record in the Atlantic Sun.
Troy couldn't get any offense going in game one of the doubleheader as they spread out five hits over eight innings. Lipscomb managed only three hits but scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to take game one 1-0. The only offensive highlight for the Trojans was a Jenny Boyd triple to right field, her ninth of the season which leads the A-Sun.
Jocelyn McCallum took a no-hitter into the seventh inning striking out nine but was not given enough run-support to earn the win. McCallum's record fell to 12-6 with the loss and Troy dropped its first A-Sun Conference Game.
In game two the Trojans opened the scoring in the game on an Amanda Ragans double down the leftfield line which drove in Senior Bonnie Belin. The run was Troy's first on the day and after the top of the second the Trojans held a 1-0 lead.
Troy broke open the game in the top of the third scoring four runs in the inning. Sophomore Stacey Dwyer doubled to the centerfielder and advanced to third on an error. Lipscomb then intentionally walked Tamra Howren to put runners on the corners. Secondbaseman Tara Blackwell singled to drive in Dwyer and advance Howren to second.
While still in the third Bonnie Belin hit into a fielder's choice as the Lipscomb shortstop committed an error trying to get Blackwell out at second. Howren scored on the play giving the Trojans a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Brittany Krbec then doubled to left to drive in Blackwell and Belin. Troy led 5-0 after two and a half innings.
The Trojans added another run in the top of the sixth on a Caurie Miller sacrifice fly. Troy would eventually win the game 6-0. Kacie Flinn got the start from the circle for the Trojans going six innings giving up only four hits and striking out two. Michelle Grinage entered the game in the seventh in relief facing four batters and giving up a hit. Flinn improved her record to 13-7 with the victory.
Flinn was given defensive help all game long but one play stood out from the rest. Lipscomb's Jessica Wilson sent a line drive to deep right-center in the bottom of the sixth only to have Jenny Boyd make a spectacular diving catch near the warning track. Lipscomb threatened again in the seventh but the Trojan defense kept the shutout intact.
With the split Troy's record moves to 31-16 overall and 7-1 in the A-Sun. Troy will go on to Belmont on Sunday to complete its weekend in Nashville. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
