ATLANTA, Ga. - Troy University Softball swept the Panthers of Georgia State in a doubleheader in Atlantic Sun Conference play Tuesday at Bob Heck Field. The Trojans notched nine runs on 22 hits over the two games to stay unbeaten in the A-Sun.
Our hitters have been really working hard and it is starting to show, said Troy hitting coach Jodi Otten. They are relaxed in the batter's box which has increased their confidence greatly.”
Troy broke the scoreless tie when the Trojans loaded the bases in the top of the third for sophomore Tara Blackwell. Blackwell grounded out to second allowing Paige Foster to score on the play. After two and a half inning Troy held a 1-0 lead.
Shortstop Caurie added an insurance in the top of the seventh when she hit her third home run of the season giving the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
That would be the final as Troy took game one 2-0. Sophomore Jocelyn McCallum dominated the Georgia State's bats as she struck out 15 giving up only two hits. At one point McCallum struck out 12 batters in a row.
The entire pitching staff has done a phenomenal job since conference play started,” said Troy pitching coach Barbara Sherwood. To only give up one earned run in 42 innings of conference play is a great feat.”
Troy opened up the scoring in game two when thirdbaseman doubled off the wall in left-center to score Blackwell who reached on a single to left. Krbec then stole third but Georgia State managed to earn the remaining outs to get out of the inning. Heading into the bottom of the second Troy held a 1-0 lead.
Catcher Tamra Howren hit her 15th home run of the season with Stacey Dwyer on base to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Tara Blackwell then doubled and then scored on a Bonnie Belin single to right-center. After four and a half innings Troy led Georgia State 4-0.
Brooke Powell hit her fourth home run of the season in the top of the sixth to increase Troy's lead to five. Georgia State ended the shutout in their half of the sixth inning when the Trojans committed errors on consecutive plays to make the score 5-1 after six.
Krbec added a couple of RBI's on a bases loaded single to right in the top of the seventh. 7-1 would be the final score as Troy improved its record to 30-15 overall and 6-0 in the Atlantic Sun. Kacie Flinn got the start from the circle and went six innings striking out four and allowing only three hits. Michelle Grinage entered the game for Troy in relief in the seventh and struck out one giving up only one hit. Flinn improved her record 12-7 with the victory.
The most important thing right now is that the team is 6-0 in the A-Sun,” said Krbec. I think everybody has stepped it up at the right time, it's not one person doing everything, it's the whole team doing what it takes in all aspects of the game.”
