TROY, Ala. - The Troy Softball Team opened up Atlantic Sun Conference play with a sweep of Jacksonville in a doubleheader Saturday at the Lady Trojans Softball Complex. The Trojans used a balanced attack to defeat the Dolphins who previously were undefeated in conference play.
We've certainly been through the fire this season with a lot of highs and lows,” said Trojans Head Coach Melanie Davis. We kept telling our girls that every game up until this point was played to get ready for conference play.”
The Trojans defeated Jacksonville in game one of the doubleheader 1-0. The Trojans notched nine hits in seven innings but did not score until the last inning of the game. Freshman Caurie Miller hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Trojans a 1-0 victory.
I was relaxed at the plate, I felt that it was my time because I haven't been hitting the ball lately,” said Miller. It was a total team effort though because our pitching and defense was incredible today.”
Sophomore Jocelyn McCallum started for the Trojans on the mound going seven innings striking out 11 batters. With the win McCallum improved her record to 10-5 on the season.
Troy opened up their offense much earlier in game two of the doubleheader. Senior Jenny Boyd led off the game with a single to third. Boyd stole second to get into scoring position. Boyd then stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Catcher Tamra Howren sent a double to left-center to reach base and advanced to third on a Tara Blackwell single to left. Sophomore Brittany Krbec then doubled to to center to drive in Howren and Blackwell to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Sophomore Stacey Dwyer started the second inning with an infield single to reach base. Dwyer then advanced to second on a ground out by Caurie Miller. Dwyer eventually scored on a Jenny Boyd single when the Jacksonville centerfielder tried to throw out Dwyer at third and overthrew the thirdbaseman. On the play Boyd advanced to third and scored later on a wild pitch.
While still in the second Lindsey Wyatt reached base on a walk and got into scoring position on a Howren single to center. Both players advanced on a wild pitch and Wyatt scored on a Tara Blackwell ground out to third. After two complete innings Troy led Jacksonville 6-0.
Jacksonville got on the board in the top of the third on a Lauren Redfern home run to to center field. It was Jacksonville's first run of the day and only their fifth hit.
Our pitching was phenomenal today,” said Davis. Both Jocelyn and Kacie (Flinn) did an outstanding job on the mound today.”
Troy ended the game in their half of the fifth inning on a Brooke Powell three-run home run to leftfield giving Troy an eight-run lead after five. Today marked the first time in Troy history that the Trojans won two games of a doubleheader with walk-off home runs.
With the two wins Troy improved its record to 26-15 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Kacie Flinn started game two and struck out six batters in five innings of work. Flinn improved her record to 10-7 on the season.
Troy will go on to host Stetson tomorrow in a doubleheader. The Hatters are 3-1 in conference play and 23-12 overall. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
