Troy Softball Finishes Rebel Spring Games Breaking Even at 2-2

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Troy University Softball Team defeated Niagara 3-2 and lost to Albany 2-1 at the Rebel Spring Games to finish out the week 2-2. Troy dropped the game against Albany in extra innings, its fifth extra-inning defeat of the season.
The Trojans defeated the Purple Eagles of Niagara in its first game of the day 3-2. Troy broke the scoreless tie early when Catcher Tamra Howren singled to centerfield to drive in Senior Jenny Boyd to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Niagara answered in the top of the third when the Purple Eagles' Tory Healy singled to leftfield to drive in two runs to take the lead. After three Niagara led 2-1.
In the bottom of the fourth Troy tied up the score at two runs apiece when Junior Denise Vera scored on a throwing error by Niagara's shortstop. Troy then took the lead in the sixth when Junior Sally Jones tripled to right-center and then was brought home on a Jenny Boyd single.
Niagara would be unable to answer in the top of the seventh and Troy would win the game 3-2. Kacie Flinn was credited with win in relief of starter Laine Harcourt. Flinn struck out five in one and two-thirds innings while Harcourt struck out eight in five and two-thirds innings.
With the win the Trojans improved their record to 23-13 heading into their matchup with Albany. The game between the Trojans and the Great Danes would go eight innings before a winner could be decided.
Troy opened up the scoring in the game in the top of the third when Sophomore Tara Blackwell laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Denise Vera. Albany tied the score at one in the third when Megan Childs scored on a Maegan Larsen ground out to third. Neither team would be able to add a run in the scheduled seven innings so the two teams went eight.
It was in Albany's half of the eighth inning that the tie would be broken. Albany's Leslie Busch reached base on a walk, then stole second, and scored on a Larsen single to right to make the score 2-1 and win the game for the Great Danes.
Troy's Jocelyn McCallum got the loss in relief moving her record to 9-5 on the year. The Trojans fell to 23-14 overall as they get ready for conference play on April 1. Before conference play starts the Trojans will travel north to take on in-state rival Birmingham-Southern on March 29.
