TROY, Ala. - The Trojan Softball Team dropped its second straight game to the Cyclones of Iowa State at home to fall to 21 and 12 on the season. Once again Troy gave up a big inning to get behind and never catch back up.
Kacie Flinn did an excellent job for us on the mound today, once again our pitching staff is saddled with an undeserving loss,” said Head Coach Melanie Davis. We have to get back to where we were earlier in the season when we had timely hitting and disciplined defense to go with our quality pitching.”
This game the big inning for a Trojan opponent was the Iowa State fifth inning. The Trojans retired the first two batters before pitcher Kacie Flinn gave up a single to Cyclones' shortstop Cary Akins. Diana Reuter then reached base on an error to advance Akins to second and give Iowa State two runners on base.
With two runners on Iowa State's Misty Kimura singled to centerfield to drive in Cary Akins. Trojan centerfielder Jenny Boyd then overthrew catcher Sally Jones trying to throw out Akins. Reuter came around to score while Kimura advanced to third. Second baseman Jennifer Bigbee singled to left to score a run and give the Cyclones a 3-0 lead.
That was all the Cyclones needed as they took the game and the series. Iowa State improved its record to 9-13 while Troy fell to 21-12. Katie Reichling improved her record to 4-4 while Flinn fell to 7-6. Flinn went seven complete innings giving up three runs on four hits with only one run being earned.
The Trojans will look to get back to there winning ways when they travel to Kissimmee, Fla. to compete in the Rebel Spring Games March 21-23. After the Rebel Spring Games Troy will travel to in-state rival Birmingham-Southern for a double header. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
