The Lady Trojan Softball Team split a double header with intra-state rival Samford Tuesday at the Lady Trojan Softball Complex. The Trojans dropped game one losing only by one run on an error while in game two newcomer Jocelyn McCallum threw a one-hitter to lead the Trojans to a 2-0 victory.
I usually don't get nervous before a game, but for some reason I was nervous before this one,” said McCallum. I guess just being in a new country and playing in a new system just was weighing on my mind.”
McCallum comes to Troy for Stafford Heights, Australia after being recruited by several U.S. schools. Coach Melanie Davis was pleased with McCallum's performance today.
Jocelyn is going to be a heck of a player,” said Davis. She has great skills and knows how to control the tempo of the game.”
In game one the Trojans could not get their offense on track only notching three hits against Samford's Susanna Meyer who pitched a shutout. Samford's scored on an error and led throughout taking the game 1-0. Senior pitcher Kacie Flinn pitched gave up only two hits in seven innings of work but did not get enough run support for the win.
We were disappointed not to give enough runs for Kacie,” said Davis. I give credit to their pitcher for keeping us off balance and making adjustments during the game.”
Game two saw the LadyTrojans bats come alive as senior first baseman Bonnie Belin paced Troy with three hits and one RBI. Senior Lindsay Wyatt had one hit and one RBI as the Lady Trojans took game two 2-0.
During McCallum's one-hitter she also broke the single game record for strikeouts with 13. The previous record was 12 and was held by current Trojan Kacie Flinn and former Trojan Kim Unkenholtz.
Both Troy and Samford were playing their season openers. Both teams records are now at 1-1 heading into the weekend. Troy will head to Hammond, La. to take part in the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament hosted by SE Louisiana.
