STARKVILLE, Miss. - Troy University and Tulsa University did battle for a second time at the 2005 Bulldog Classic with the result being the same as the previous game. The Trojans defeated the Golden Hurricane in extra innings to move to 3-2 in the tournament and 11-3 overall.
Coach Melanie Davis was impressed with how her team responded to the challenge provided by Tulsa.
We're pleased with how our team rebounded from yesterday's games,” said Davis. The combination of pitcher's Kacie Flinn and Jocelyn McCallum handling the Tulsa offense was key to our victory today.”
Flinn got the start going four innings giving up only one run on six hits striking out four. McCallum also went four innings giving up no hits and no runs while striking out four as well. Since the score was tied at one when Flinn left the game McCallum was credited with the victory improving her record to 6-0 on the year.
In Troy's half of the first inning Senior Jenny Boyd reached base on an error by Tulsa's second baseman. Sophomore Tara Blackwell laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Boyd to second and a Tamra Howren single to the gap in right field to allowed Boyd to score. After one full inning the Trojans led 1-0.
Tulsa evened up the score at one in the top of the second when Sara Dyer homered to left. Neither team would score again in regulation as the two teams would head to extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth inning Troy would take the lead and the game on a Blackwell sacrifice fly. Due to the international tie-breaker rule Paige Foster, who started the game in left field, was placed on second. Boyd advanced Foster to third on a sacrifice bunt which was ruled a fielder's choice as the Tulsa defense attempted to throw out Foster at third. It was then that Tara Blackwell hit a long fly ball to centerfield which allowed Foster to score.
I'm really proud of how our kids put themselves in position to win this game,” said Davis.
For the game Troy scored two runs on two hits committing no errors to get the win. Tulsa scored one run on six hits committing two errors while falling to 6-9 on the season. With the win Troy earned second place in the 2005 Bulldog Classic. Due to inclement weather Troy's rematch with Mississippi State was cancelled.
