Troy, Ala. - The Troy University men's tennis team won its first conference game of the year, topping two-time defending Atlantic Sun champion UCF 4-3 in Troy on Friday.
The Trojans (2-5, 1-0 A-Sun) lost the doubles point, as UCF (2-3, 0-1 A-Sun) won all three doubles matches. Irving Morales defeated UCF's Enor Gursey 6-4,6-1 at the No. 1 position. Troy's Marko Depsot defeated UCF's Simian Jager 4-6,6-3,6-0 in the No. 2 position, and Daniel Quiceno topped Antonio Sierra 6-3,6-1 in the No. 3 spot. After dropping the first set, Artur Muller defeated Sinan Sudos 2-6,6-0,6-4 in the No. 6 position to clinch the game for Troy.
"This was a huge win for us," said Troy head coach Eric Hayes. "UCF has won the conference the last two seasons, and to beat them is great for our players. This is why we played such a difficult schedule early in the season. I think today's win showed that it has prepared us to win conference matches."
Troy returns to action on Sunday when they play at South Carolina.
