HAMMOND, La. - Lady Trojan Softball defeated the Lady Lions of Southeastern Louisiana Saturday night to win the Lion Classic. The Lady Trojans shutout the Lady Lions 10-0 in five innings of play.
Any tournament championship is big, but it is especially big when it is the first of the season,” said Troy Head Coach Melanie Davis. This truly was a team effort throughout the five games of the tournament.”
Jocelyn McCallum pitched another gem as she only allowed one hit in four innings of work. McCallum struck out eight en route to her third win of the season. In three starts for Troy she has allowed only two hits and has not allowed a run to score.
Offensively Troy continued its stellar performance at the plate with seven different Lady Trojan batters getting hits. Troy put up ten runs on nine hits with only one strikeout on offense.
The Lady Trojans opened up the scoring in the top of the third. Troy loaded the bases for first baseman Bonnie Belin who singled to drive in Jenny Boyd to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Amanda Ragans singled to left field to drive in Tara Blackwell and Tamra Howren. Belin came around to score on a balk by the pitcher Jamie Militello. At the end of the third the Lady Trojans led 4-0.
The whole team was in the game and the chemistry was good,” said Ragans. Driving in those RBI's kept me and my teammates going throughout the game.”
In the top of the fourth Lindsey Wyatt hit the fence in dead center to earn a double. Paige Foster was brought in to pinch run for Wyatt. Rightfielder Stacey Dwyer laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Foster to third. Jenny Boyd put down another bunt to score Foster to make it a 5-0 lead.
The Lady Trojans continued to produce in the top of the fourth as Tamra Howren hit a single to put a man on first and second. Belin loaded the bases with a single to right. A Ragans walk scored Boyd and kept the bases loaded for Sally Jones. Jones doubled down the leftfield line to score Howren and Belin, but Ragans was thrown at third by the catcher Karin Smith to end the inning. After three and half innings Troy led Southeastern La. 8-0.
In the top of the fifth Troy added two more runs when Jenny Boyd tripled to score Lindsey Wyatt, Boyd then came home on an error by the Lady Lions to make the score 10-0. Southeastern La. could not muster any offense and the Lady Trojans won the game in five innings.
We had excellent pitching, great defense, and timely hitting,” said Davis. When you put those three together you're going to be successful and we did just that.”
Troy will host Florida A&M on Wednesday at the Lady Trojan Softball Complex, then head to Starkville, Miss. the following weekend to take part in a tournament hosted by Mississippi State. Other teams participating include Tulsa and Tennessee Tech.
