MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Troy University senior Shauna McVeigh battled cold and rain Tuesday to shoot a 76 -- the second-best round of the day -- to capture medalist honors at the inaugural Troy Women's Invitational. The senior's tournament-low 72 on Monday proved to be difference in the three-shot win, her first on the collegiate level.
Starting on the back nine on Tuesday, McVeigh three-putted No. 10 before a birdie on 11 and an eagle on 12 (the only one of the tournament) moved her to two-under. She birdied 14 before giving strokes back at No. 15 and 16 to turn at one-under 35.
With the weather deteriorating, McVeigh bogied three of the first four holes on the front nine, plus the final two holes for a score of five-over 41 on the back.
Katelyn Crosson shot a 79 on Tuesday to finish tied for 10th at 12-over 156 (77-79). Kristy Stephens trimmed six shots off her 77 yesterday to finish in a tie for 42nd at 168 (87-81), while Danielle Skipper dropped three strokes to finish in a tie for 45th at 169 (86-83).
Sam Kreiger, who shot a 108 on Monday, withdrew from the competition on Tuesday.
The tournament wrapped up the fall portion of the 2005-06 schedule. The Trojans return to action February 20, 2006 at the Miccosukee Women's Golf Championship in Miami, Fla.
