CLEMSON, S.C. -- The Troy University men's tennis team will open the 2005 season at No. 29 Clemson on Saturday. The teams will play in a double header, playing at 9 a.m. and again at 2 p.m. The match is a return to his coaching roots for Troy head coach Eric Hayes, who began his coaching career as an assistant at Clemson under current Tiger head coach Chuck Kriese in 1986.
Troy returns the 2004 Atlantic Sun Player and Freshman of the Year in sophomore Irving Morales. Morales finished 17-6 in singles play last spring and 4-5 this fall. Seniors Robert van Swelm and Daniel Quiceno also return for Troy. Van Swelm finished 11-10 in the spring of 2004, and 3-3 in fall play. Quiceno sat out last spring, but finished 5-4 in fall play.
Clemson finished in the NCAA Final Eight in2004. They are led by All-American Nathan Thompson, who had a 22-19 record in singles and a 25-20 mark in doubles play last season. Ryan Young had a 24-9 singles record in 2004, and a 25-8 mark in doubles play for the Tigers.
"These matches show that we're the type of program who will play anyone, anywhere," said Hayes, who is in his third season with the Trojans. "This is a good opportunity for us to compete with one of the top programs in the country."
