Troy to host second USTA tournament

TROY, Ala. -- Troy University and the city of Troy will host the second annual $50,000 United States Tennis Association Pro Circuit Tennis Tournament Sept. 27-Oct. 3.
This is one of 16 events held nationally at the $50,000 level by the pro circuit. Other tour locations include Asburn, Va., Cary, N.C., Pittsburg, Penn., and Palm Beach Garden, Fla.
Laura Granville is ranked 68th in the world and has earned an automatic bid to compete in this tournament. Granville, a native of Chicago, Ill., was the 2000 and 2001 NCAA singles champion for Stanford University and was named to the 2000 USA Collegiate Team sponsored by USTA.
Granville just finished competing in the US Open where she lost to defending Wimbledon champion, Maria Sharpova, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
In addition to Granville, two other athletes ranked in the top 100 of the world have also earned automatic bids, Shenay Perry who is ranked 91st and Teryn Ashley who is 98th.
We're excited about having this highly ranked of a field coming this year,” TROY head tennis coach Eric Hayes said. Our draw this year is much better than it was last year.”
Other events throughout the week will include a Player-Sponsor Party with a silent auction, a Pro-Amateur Tournament and assemblies at local schools. Admission to the tournament is free.
