Stephens, Troy in fourth halfway through Hatter Fall Classic

DeLAND, Fla. - Troy University sophomore Kristy Stephens fired a career-low 74 in the first round of the Hatter Fall Classic on Monday to tie for fourth place and lead the Trojans women's golf team to fourth place in the 13-team field.
Stephens, a native of Toronto, carded a one-under-par 35 on the front and finished with a 39 on the back to reach the career-low score that was three-over par on the 5,963-yard Victoria Hills Golf Club. She is tied aith Campbell's Alejandra Shaw for fourth in the 70-player field. The Trojans shot a team score of 309, their lowest total of the fall season, trailing third-place UCF by three shots. Campbell leads the tournament with a score of 295, while Georgia State sits in second at 301.
"The girls played pretty well for the most part," Troy head coach Matt Terry said. "There are a few small things that we need to fix, and maybe we can crack into that top three on Tuesday. This is a good test for us for the conference championships coming up in the spring, so we would like to come out and have a strong showing on the final day."
Victoria Hills will play host to the 2005 A-Sun Women's Golf Championships on April 10-13, and eight of the league's 11 schools are participating in this week's event. Mercer is tied for seventh, host Stetson is in ninth, Jacksonville sits in 10th and Florida Atlantic is in 12th.
Junior Shauna McVeigh and freshman Emily Parker are tied for 13th individually after each carding a 77 in the opening round. McVeigh, a native of County Down, Northern Ireland, shot 37 on the front and turned in a 40 on the back, while Parker, a Gulfport, Miss., native, shot 40 on the front and came in with a 37 on the back nine.
Sophomore Vicki Power is tied for 34th after carding an 81 (41-40), while junior Katelyn Crosson is tied for 53rd after shooting 86 (42-44). Freshman Stephanie Perez, who is competing individually, is tied for 45th after carding an 84 (43-41.
Campbell's Maite OrtizdePinedo leads the event after a three-under-par 69 on Monday.
The final round of the 36-hole event will begin on Tuesday morning.
