Mike Ryan enters his second season as an assistant coach at Troy in 2014-15. In his first season, Ryan helped the Trojans to a 12-18 overall record and an 8-10 mark in Sun Belt play. The Trojans finished fifth in the Sun Belt standings, their best finish in five years.
The Trojans averaged a Sun Belt-best 80.4 points per game, the 15th best mark in the NCAA, in 2013-14 and became just the second Sun Belt team since 2000 to average over 80.0 points per game. Ryan worked primarily with the Troy post players, including Ronita Garrett who recorded seven double-doubles in her first season with the Trojans and was fifth in the Sun Belt with 7.9 rebounds per game.
He came to Troy after spending the previous six seasons in the ACC, including two seasons as a full-time staff member, mostly at North Carolina State.
Ryan was most recently an interim assistant coach at NC State following the 2012-13 season before arriving in Troy. He spent the 2012-13 season as the assistant to internal women’s basketball operations for the Wolfpack and head coach Kellie Harper.
In 2011-12, Ryan began the year as the assistant video coordinator for NC State before joining the Georgia Tech women’s basketball staff as a scouting coach in February. While in Atlanta under head coach MaChelle Joseph, he helped the Yellow Jackets to the ACC Championship Game and the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16.
Ryan was introduced to women’s basketball as an undergraduate at NC State, serving as a manager from 2007 to 2011, including two seasons under legendary coach Kay Yow and two under Harper. Ryan also served as the Wolfpack video intern during his final season as a manager.
During his combined six seasons in the ACC, Ryan was a part of two NCAA Tournament teams and three WNIT teams, with all but one of those coming in Raleigh, N.C., with the Wolfpack.
Ryan received his bachelor’s degree in sport management from North Carolina State University in May 2011.
