John Carr begins his third season as Troyโs assistant head coach and inside receivers coach, prior to the 2021 season he added the title of passing game coordinator.

In Carrโs first two seasons, Kaylon Geiger has emerged as one of the top receivers in the country. The 2019 Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year finished the 2020 season ranked third among active players with 6.13 receptions per game over his career. Geigerโs nine 100-yard receiving games since the start of the 2019 season are the most in Troy history and third most in the country.

During his first season, Troy receivers topped the 100-yard mark 11 different times to shatter the Troy school record that previously stood at seven games.ย

As a unit, the Trojans topped the 500-yard mark in total offense on six different occasions to tie the programโs DI record and scored 35-plus points eight times; the second most in program history and fourth most in Sun Belt Conference history. The Trojans finished ninth nationally in passing offense (313.2), 25th in scoring offense (33.8)ย and 18th in total offense (456.3).
Carr joined the Troy staff following one season at ULM where he was the receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. A long-time high school coach in the state of Louisiana, Carr has more than 20 years of coaching experience at the high school, junior college and collegiate levels.ย

A successful high school coach in Monroe, Louisiana, Carr returned to the city in 2018 to coach at ULM. The Warhawks were one of the top passing teams in the Sun Belt with Carrโs receivers averaging 247.5 yards per game; the second most in the league. Additionally, ULM posted a 6-6 overall record and 4-4 Sun Belt mark; both the best finishes for ULM since 2013.

Receiver Marcus Green earned first team All-Sun Belt honors after ranking second in the league in touchdowns and yards per catch. Green was a finalist for the Paul Hornung Award and finished with four scoring plays of 69 yards or more, the second most in the country.

Prior to returning to Monroe, Carr served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Jones County Junior College for two seasons and helped lead the Bobcats to a combined record of 14-5. In addition to his play-calling responsibilities, he also coached the quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends.

In 2017, Jones County went 8-2 overall, including a 6-1 record in conference play, while ranking among the NJCAA national leaders in scoring offense (seventh at 41.4 points per game), rushing offense (eighth at 261.8 yards per game) and total offense (12th at 453.2 ypg). The Bobcats scored 50 or more points in three games, including 61 at Southwest Mississippi. Carr coached two All-MACJC South selections, in wide receiver Kendall Parham (first team) and tight end Chancie Tidwell (second team).

In 2016, Jones County finished among the national leaders in rushing offense (seventh at 238.6 ypg), total offense (18th at 392.8 ypg) and scoring offense (27th at 30.4 ppg).

Carr previously worked for three years as the director of football operations forย Todd Monkenย at Southern Miss (2013-15) โ Lindsey served as Southern Missโ offensive coordinator during the final two years of Carrโs tenure with the Golden Eagles.

From 2005-12, Carr served as head coach at Ouachita Parish (La.) High School where he compiled a 72-28 record in eight seasons. In his first year, he led the Lions to the Class 4A semifinals. His teams advanced to the state quarterfinals on three occasions (2006: Class 4A, 2008: Class 5A and 2012: Class 5A). During his tenure, more than 30 of his student-athletes signed scholarship offers with collegiate programs.

Prior to becoming head coach at Ouachita Parish, Carr spent the 2004 season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for his father, Roger, at East Mississippi Community College.ย

Carr gained experience as an assistant coach at four Monroe area high schools, including Neville, Ouachita, West Monroe and West Ouachita.

The Ruston, Louisiana, native was a three-year letterman (1993-95) as a wide receiver at Louisiana Tech. He earned his bachelorโs degree in health and physical education from Louisiana Tech in 1996 and masterโs degree in administration and supervision from ULM in 2001.

His father, who was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, was a two-time All-America wide receiver at Louisiana Tech (1972-73) and spent 10 years in the National Football League (Baltimore Colts, 1974-81; Seattle Seahawks, 1982; San Diego Chargers, 1983).ย

Carr is married to the former Paige Hammonds and the couple has two daughters: Anna and Emma.
