TROY, Alabama – Former Auburn guard Tyra Johnson signed to play with Troy on Wednesday, head coach Chanda Rigby announced.
Â
After transferring from Auburn in May, Johnson spent last season at Chipola College where she averaged 11.1 points in 27 games for the Indians. The 5-7 guard played in 20 games as a freshman on The Plains averaging 3.0 points in 7.8 minutes per game.
Â
"Tyra is a unique player who brings a specific skill set to our team," Rigby said. "Her scoring from the perimeter will stretch our opponent's defense and create more room for our post players to go to work around the goal."
Â
As a standout at Austin High School in Decatur, Ala., Johnson was rated as the No. 24 point guard in the nation by ESPN HoopGurlz and was nominated for McDonald's All-American. Johnson averaged 17.8 points and 3.3 assists as a senior while making 111 3-pointers. She led her team to a 27-6 record during her final prep season.
Â
On Tuesday, Rigby announced the addition of Ole Miss transfer Kate Rodgers. The Trojans will also gain the services of former Louisiana Tech guard Jasmine LeBlanc, who sat out last season due to transfer rules. In November, Troy signed Japonica James, who recently posted 10 points and eight rebounds to lead Tallahassee Community College to its first NJCAA Division I Women's national title, as well as Pearl-Cohn (Nashville, Tenn.) star Shawnta Shaw.
