TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's basketball team added a vital piece to its 2018-19 roster on Wednesday signing heralded Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School guard Shawnta Shaw.
Shaw, a Nashville native, is a multi-sport star for the Firebirds winning regional championships in track as well as guiding the basketball team to the state finals a year ago. Along with current Trojan Janiah Sandifer, Shaw led Pearl-Cohn to a 26-5 record and fell just short of the school's first state title dropping a 66-62 decision in double overtime.
The 5-foot-2 guard is a two-time all-metro and all-district team selection; she was also named to the Tennessee Sports Writers Association All-State Team earlier this year and received the Hancock/Nipper Basketball Sportsmanship award, which is handed out each year to an athlete who best exemplifies character and sportsmanship.
"Shawnta is very fast and has a very high motor," Troy head coach Chanda Rigby said. "Those thing will make her very good in our offense. Trojan fans will love to watch her, she's an electrifying player."
In addition to her accolades on the hardwood, Shaw is a highly-praised track athlete. The 2018 graduate finished third in the state in the 200 meter and fourth in the long jump.
Pearl-Cohn opens its 2017-18 season on Nov. 14. The back-to-back Sun Belt Conference champion Trojans host Stillman on Nov. 10 in Trojan Arena at 12 p.m. to begin their title defense.
