TROY, Ala. – Troy softball walked off on a Louisiana error to win 5-4 in an extra-inning thriller. The Trojans (24-16, 4-6 SBC) secured their first walk-off win of the season after a Ragin' Cajuns (18-18, 4-6 SBC) defender overthrew the first base bag.
Following a leadoff double by Makaley Boswell, Louisiana intentionally walked Taylor McKinney. The error, which happened while trying to turn a double play on a Cassidy Boltz ground ball, allowed Boswell to race home and end the game.
The Trojans used a three-run fifth inning to take a late lead over the Ragin' Cajuns, who fought back to tie the game 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning. Annie Orman ignited the offense with a moonshot to left field, and Boswell gave Troy a 3-2 lead after she rocketed a two-run homer to left.
Troy hit three home runs in the contest, bringing its tally to 10 in the last five games. Orman finished the night 1-for-3 with one RBI, and Boswell ended the game 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Caiden Oliva mauled a hanging breaking ball to hit her sixth-inning homer.
From the circle, Alyssa Faircloth kept Troy in the game with a strong outing. She pitched 7.1 innings, allowing four runs and six hits, striking out four batters. Savannah Money (3-4) held Louisiana in check in the eighth inning, as she induced two ground balls.
Neither team could strike in the early going, with Faircloth and Tyra Clary shutting the offenses down in the first two innings. While Faircloth scattered two hits and Boltz smacked a double into right-center field, no runs crossed the plate.
Louisiana struck first, scoring on an RBI groundout in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Despite a Natalie Turner bunt single to start the bottom of the third, the Trojans couldn't tie it up.
The Ragin' Cajuns added a run to their lead in the fourth inning, making it 2-0 off an RBI double. The Trojans couldn't get a baserunner in the bottom of the inning.
Faircloth bounced back in the fifth inning, working a quick one-two-three inning. Troy's bats exploded in the bottom of the frame. Orman started the rally after she leaped on a 1-0 pitch to start the inning with a solo home run.
McKinnon Howard reached on a bunt single, and Boswell crushed a two-run home run to hand the Trojans a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, Faircloth sat down the Ragin' Cajuns in order. Oliva gave the Trojans an insurance run with a solo shot to left, her seventh home run of the season.
Louisiana loaded the bases in the seventh inning and tied the game up with a double to left-center field. Troy didn't get a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
After Faircloth walked a batter in the eighth inning, Savannah Money entered the game and ended the frame with two straight groundouts.
Boswell led off the bottom of the inning with a double to right field, and Louisiana intentionally walked McKinney. The Trojans walked it off a batter later on the error.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a happy ending today – it was stressful but fun. We've lost so many close games this year and had our heart ripped out a few different games, but this team continues to work. Tonight feels really good, and it's a relief almost. A lot of players had to step up and do things in key moments that they're not used to. There were a lot of key moments, big home runs and strong pitching performances. We played good defense, which was something we emphasized today."
