TROY, Ala. – Following an impressive start to the outdoor season, sophomore sprinter Tydreke Thomas was named the Sun Belt Men's Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday morning.
Thomas, a native of Valdosta, Ga., competed in the USF Alumni Invitational in Orlando, Fla., last weekend and put up an impressive time of 10.26 in the 100m – setting a new personal record which was good for fourth place in a loaded finale. The time is tied for the second-best in program history and is just .04 seconds off the program record set by Hakim Montgomery in 2017.
"Tydreke has been consistent all season, and It's hard to run as fast as he has run consistently," Director of Track and Field Marc Davis said. "However, he is working hard to do it. He is truly figuring out how hard the work is to get to this level and beyond. He is figuring out that this sport is about the little things. I am excited to see where he goes from this point on."
In addition to placing well in the event, his time is currently the 10th fastest in the country in the 100m this outdoor season. In the east region, it's the sixth fastest time, and it's the fastest among all Sun Belt Athletes.
It's the first Athlete of the Week honor for Troy since Jaggerd Moore won Field Athlete of the Week on April 26, 2023.
Thomas and the Trojans will be back in action later this week when they travel to Oxford, Miss., for the Ole Miss Classic.
