TROY, Ala. – The Trojan offense was unstoppable on Tuesday night, as they rode a 52.5 shooting percentage to take down Southern-New Orleans 110-63 in Trojan Arena.
Troy's (5-5) 110 points are the second most this season and their most since they scored 111 against Reinhardt on Nov. 14 in Troy.
Christyon Eugene led the Trojans in points once again, as he scored 19 points for his 10th consecutive game in double-figures.
Randarius Jones had the best game in his Troy career, as he set a new career high in points with 15. He was 7-9 from the field and grabbed five rebounds. Jone's previous high was 10, which he set in the first game of the season against Fort Lauderdale. In his last two games, Jones has 22 points on 9-11 shooting.
Aamer Muhammad (13), Thomas Dowd (11) and Theo Seng (10) also scored in double-figures. It's the fourth time this season that Troy has had five players score in double-figures.
The Trojans started slow from the field in the first half, shooting just 43.3 percent from the field, and couldn't slow down SUNO's offense, who shot 52 percent. Despite that, Troy took a 48-37 lead into the break partly due to 27 first-half rebounds.
The Trojan's offense came alive in the final 20 minutes and completely put the game out of reach. Coming out of the under-16 media timeout in the second half, Troy outscored the Knights 50-17 – which also included a 21-0 scoring run.
The Trojans finished the night shooting 52.5 percent, the second-best mark this season (54.8 percent vs. Reinhardt), and it's the second time they have shot over 50 percent this season. They went 14-35 (40 percent) from deep. They had their best charity-stripe performance this season, going 12-14.
SUNO finished with a 42.9 percent mark from the field and 37.5 percent from distance. They went 9-19 from the free-throw line. Jamal Gibson led the way with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Playing to Its Strengths
Troy went back to what had worked all season as they dominated the glass. The Trojans grabbed a season-high 53 rebounds. It's the second time this season they have had 50-plus rebounds in a game (51 vs. Reinhardt) and the most since they 53 against Jacksonville State on Nov. 16, 2021. For the second time this season, Troy had 21 offensive rebounds (at Eastern Kentucky), which is the most since they had 23 against Toccoa Falls in 2016.
Seng had a career-high eight rebounds. The Trojans also had 50 points inside the paint compared to SUNO's 28.
The Trojans dished out a season-high 26 assists on Tuesday, the most since they dished out 30 against SUNO in 2022. They also limited the turnovers to 11. Troy had 25 points off turnover compared to SUNO's 7.
Troy continued to get strong bench production, as the Trojan reserves scored 54 points. Leading the bench effort was Jones with his 15 points.
Thoughts from Coach
Head coach Scott Cross gave his thoughts following the game:
"I was very disappointed with our defense at halftime; offensively, we were fine. I didn't feel like we guarded at all. Credit to them, they did hit some shots. They got to the baskets and to the free-throw line. They outplayed us in the first half. The last 15 minutes our guys really turned it on. At least we ended the game the right way. We definitely sat down and played better defense."
Up Next
The Trojans head to Oxford, Miss., to play its final non-conference road game against Ole Miss next Tuesday at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+, SECN+ and the Troy Sports Radio Network.
