TROY, Ala. — The Troy men's basketball team enters the 2023-24 season with a talented and experienced group of guards who look to elevate the Troy offense to the next level.
The backcourt is headlined by Christyon "Spudd" Eugene and Aamer Muhammad, who each received preseason conference honors. Eugene was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team, and Muhammad was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Third Team. The duo is joined by a plethora of transfers, who are expected to make a major impact for the Trojans.
"Aamer, Spudd, Tayton Conerway and Marcus Rigsby Jr. should be as strong as any backcourt in the Sun Belt," head coach Scott Cross said. "All four players are quick, athletic, can pass, dribble and shoot the basketball."
Conerway, a junior from Burleson, Texas, joins the Trojans this season after spending the previous two years at Ranger College. Conerway ended the 2022-23 season with 3.5 assists and 1.6 steals to rank eighth and fifth in the NJCAA Region V. All of this led to him earning TABC Men's Player of the Year in the JUCO division and NJCAA D-I Men's Basketball All-American First Team.
Rigsby Jr. comes to Troy after an impressive season at Tyler College, where he played in all 30 games and led the team in scoring with 15.4 points per game on 43.6 percent shooting. He also added 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
Marcus Friend and Braydon Whitaker are also newcomers to this year's team. Friend, a native of Albany, N.Y., last played a full season at Mansfield University during the 2021-22 campaign. He started 23 games, appearing in all 28, and averaged 9.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.3 steals. His 64 steals ranked ninth all-time in program history for one season.
A native of Slocomb, Ala., Whitaker joined the Trojans as a player this season. Last year, Whitaker served as a team manager for Troy. Prior to that, he played two seasons at Enterprise State Community College.
Kameryn Mitchell, a guard from Dothan, Ala., returns to Troy for his sophomore season. He appeared in six games during his freshman year.
The Troy men's basketball opens its 2023-24 season against Fort Lauderdale on Monday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. CT in Trojan Arena. Admission for Monday's contest is free of charge. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+, and live stats will be available on TroyStats.com.
