TROY, Ala. – The Troy Men's and Women's Basketball programs are off to a hot start as one of 34 schools nationally with both programs tallying double-digit wins this season.
Joining the likes of historic programs such as Alabama, Texas, North Carolina and Duke, the Troy men's and women's squads are both off to a 12-5 start, good for a combined 24 wins.
The men gained their 12th victory against Appalachian State on Saturday, surmounting the win total from last season. With the win, the Trojans remain on pace for their best start since the 2003-04 season, where Troy opened the season 24-5 and made the NIT.
"It's a blessing," head coach Scott Cross said. "I'm just thankful for each win. It shows their level of toughness. It shows their level of togetherness. Sometimes guys kind of lose their edge after big wins, but we have not. We are tough. We are physical. Our guys play together."
The women have kickstarted conference play an impressive 3-0 with a shorthanded lineup each contest. The Trojans are the only undefeated team in the league of the teams who have played a conference game.
Saturday, the Trojans picked up a signature win over UT Arlington, who at the time sat at the top of league standings.
"We were out here in Texas fighting against all sorts of adversity," head coach Chanda Rigby said. "The group of players that came out and won these two games are putting the WAR in Trojan Warrior."
This week, the Troy Men's Basketball squad will square off against Georgia Southern at home on Thursday while the women are on the road at Louisiana in a rematch of the Sun Belt Tournament championship game.
Both squads will head into Trojan Arena on Saturday for a doubleheader as a part of Basketball Letterwinners Day. This game will also honor the 30-year anniversary of Troy's NCAA record breaking 258-point game.
Tipoff for the women's game is set for 2 p.m. with the men to follow.
