MUSCLE SHOALS, Alabama – Fátima Fernández Cano fired a 1-under 71 to push Troy into the lead following Tuesday's second round of the Sun Belt Conference Women's Golf Championship at the Fighting Joe Course. Cano will carry a one-shot lead in the individual race into Wednesday's final round.
Troy entered the day two shots back of Texas State and ended the round with a three-shot lead over the Bobcats and a two-shot advantage over Georgia State. The Trojans have now led following eight of the past 11 rounds at the Sun Belt Championship and been in the top two in all 11; Troy is in search of its third Sun Belt title in the past four years.
The Trojans have done their damage on the par 5s as they have combined to shoot 1-under over the opening two days, while Georgia State and Little Rock are tied for second at 4-over. Cano and Gabi Oubre' lead the field at 3-under and 2-under, respectively, on the par 5s.
Cano, who had three birdies and no bogeys in the opening round, carded a pair of birdies – No. 7 and No. 11 – around a single bogey – No. 13 – to jump into the lead. A Cano victory would mark just the third time in Sun Belt history that an individual has won multiple Sun Belt titles – Alena Sharp, New Mexico State (2001, 03) and Stephanie Sherlock, Denver (2007, 08). Cano won the 2014 Sun Belt title on a playoff hole her freshman season.
Bianca Lohbauer birdied two of her final four holes to shoot an even back nine and finish the day with a 3-over 75 and move up a spot into a four-way tie for fourth place. Oubre' ended her day with a 4-over 76 to slide into a tie for 17th place, while Becca Horner is tied for 28th following a 6-over 78 and Lindsey Harrison is tied for 33rd after shooting 9-over on the day.
Troy, Georgia State and Texas State will make up Wednesday's final pairing with the first wave of golfers hitting the course at 8:15 a.m.
