Troy Indoor Starts 2018 Season with a Bang

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Troy indoor track and field wrapped up its first competition of the 2018 season with an impressive, second-place showing at the BSC Indoor Icebreaker Friday.

The women's team scored 69 points on their way to a second-place finish, while the men were runners-up in their division with 70.5 points.
Â
The Trojans boasted 27 top 5 finishes and 42 top 10 in the 29 events at the meet. Those finishes were highlighted by five event victories.

Women's Athlete of the Meet – Indiya Summerville
Thrower Indiya Summerville only competed in one event Friday, but made the most of it. Summerville threw the shot put 14.37-meters to earn first in the event, setting a new school indoor shot put record. She broke her own record of 14.33-meters, set in 2016.

After placing third in the 60-meter dash, Niata Alexander bounced back and won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.53-seconds. She also anchored the women's 4x400-meter relay team that won their event by over two seconds.

Men's Athlete of the Meet – Michael Alvernaz
Junior Michael Alvernaz earned a first-place finish in the weight throw event with a school record 19.32-meter toss – breaking the record that he set just last season. The second-place finisher in the event was nearly three meters short of Alvernaz's throw.

Former Junior World Champion Hakim Montgomery qualified for the 60-meter dash finals with a time of 6.79-seconds. In the finals, he improved his time to 6.70-seconds on his way to a win in the event.

NOTABLE
• Indiya Summerville and Michael Alvernaz both broke their own school records in their respective events, shot put and weight throw, in the BSC Indoor Icebreaker.

• All but one of Troy's seven indoor meets will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex – including the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in February. The lone trip away from Birmingham will be to the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C.

• The December 1 meet marks the earliest start in Troy's track and field history. The next meet is set for January 12.

• Five returning Trojans have NCAA postseason experience entering this year. Junior Hakim Montgomery has earned a trip in each of his first two seasons.
