Ryan Kay Earns Lou Groza and Sun Belt Player of the Week Honors

TROY, Alabama – Troy senior kicker Ryan Kay was named the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and was named a Lou Groza Star of the Week following his career-performance in Troy's victory at Southern Miss this past Saturday.

During the fourth quarter of a 34-31 game, Kay booted a 43-yard field goal to ensure that Southern Miss needed a late go-ahead touchdown to get the win.

The Jonesboro, Ga., native also hit field goals from 42 and 39 yards out, while going 4-for-4 on extra point attempts, scoring a total of 13 points in the first Troy win against Southern Miss. since 1935.

With his four extra points made against Southern Miss., Kay is now a perfect 41-for-41 on point after attempts in his career, and is the lone player in Troy history to be perfect on PATs. With his 41 made PAT's, Kay surpassed Brian Wilson in the record books for the 15th spot.

Kay is ranked 10th in the Troy record books in field goal percentage hitting .696 of his attempts. With his career-best three field goals made on Saturday, Kay improved to 16-of-23 for his career, and tied Randy Hicks for 14th all-time in the Troy record books. His strong performance on Saturday put him on the national scene, ranking 15th in the country with five field goals made through the first three games of the season.

Kay's punting was also a valuable asset in the win against Southern Miss. He averaged 41.0 yards on nine attempts, and came up clutch late in the fourth quarter with a 37-yard punt that pushed the Golden Eagles back to the 1-yard line. The Troy defense forced a three-and-out as the Trojans took over on Southern Miss' 26-yard line. Kay hit a game-long 43-yard field goal to seal the game for the Trojans. Kay ranks 45th nationally averaging 42.5 yards per punt on 19 attempts.

The Trojans are back at home this weekend to kickoff Sun Belt Conference play against the New Mexico State Aggies. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
